The role and features of intercultural communication in African social processes

Africa is a scene of diverse social problems, in which communication also plays an important role. However, the continent’s cultural diversity poses challenges to those involved in conflict management, whether they are Africans or non-Africans. Participants in military or humanitarian operations, business or diplomatic relations must also face with the pitfalls of intercultural communication. As a special case, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in the continent provides many examples of political, health, law enforcement and organizational discourses and communication. The restrictions imposed and the means of resolving the resulting social difficulties were or could have been appropriate forms of communication. But similarly interesting communication strategies can be observed on migration issues. Examining, comparing, and analysing social narratives can yield practical results that can significantly influence the direction of social processes in Africa. As an alternative historical narrative, literature must also reckon with the opportunities and difficulties arising from cultural and linguistical diversity in the continent.

This thematic issue of the Journal of Central and Eastern European African Studies deals with theoretical and practical issues of intercultural communication.
